How To Maintain a Soft Heart

“Be Soft…do not let the world make you hard.. do not let pain make you hate…do not let bitterness steal your sweetness….”

I have a stubborn personality. The key to dealing with me is this: Don’t get in my way when I am passionate about something. The other key to this is that I am only extremely passionate about a few things in life: Caring for others, and maintaining personal relationships.

Ironically, my two passions can cause some of the deepest pain a person can ever feel. Naturally, because we are all sinners, I will hurt you & I will get hurt. My natural response to pain and hurt is anger, and bitterness. I tell myself: “I will never forgive him/her.”

Obviously, my response does not fit in with “Be Soft…do not let the world make you hard.. do not let pain make you hate…do not let bitterness steal your sweetness….”  So If I can’t tell you how to remain soft, who can?

Well, This first place you can look is the bible. It’s got a lot of good things to say about community, and loving the people around you. Here are my to “Go To” verses that remind me how to stop being a crazy pants.

James 1:2-4
Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. 3 For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

If you don’t have a bible you can read through it at biblegateway.com  My favorite version to read is NLT because it’s the easiest to understand.

Another thing that I turn to is reading positive and inspiring messages. Sometimes just absorbing positive information can be just what I needed.

Whether it’s music, movies, books, audiobooks, or a blog, sometimes just finding something with a positive or inspiring message can really be a great way to do your best at not letting your circumstances spoil the beauty that lies within your heart and mind.
